AN allegation has been made that Royal Navy personnel confiscated a fishing net in error. The owner of the net shot off Cairnbulg, who wished to remain anonymous, has complained to the Fishery Office and asked for his net back! The man, a lobster fisherman from Inverallochy, claims the net was shot to catch bait for his lobster pots, but the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries alleges that the net was set for illegal gill netting of salmon and it is being held as a production for any future court case.

A BROCH firm has been linked with the World Bowling Championships being held in Aberdeen. John Willox Car Sales, as a top Renault dealer, has supplied two courtesy cars to the bowlers. Renault is one of the tournament's sponsors.

THESE snapshots of Fraserburgh adorned Page three of the 'Herald' for a special 12-pages Jubilee edition. From left to right, top: The Harbour, Broad Street and Cross, Kinnaird Lighthouse and Tower; bottom: Entrance to Harbours, Esplanade, Breakwater and Lighthouse.

OVER 30 individuals contributed articles about their personal recollections of Fraserburgh. The first such contributor, David M Watt, then editor of the Ross-shire Herald began: "Forty-eight years ago when the "Fraserburgh Herald" was learning to walk, on 6th December, 1886, my 19th birthday, Mr Andrew Tarras" (founder of the 'Herald') " greeted me in the dark dingy station on a wet and windy night and led me to 36 Cross Street, placing "youth at the helm." Mr Tarras was venturesome. I was bold. I succeeded Mr Johnstone, whose rare journalistic flair old readers will recall. Mr Hogarth, a prince of printers, preceded Mr Johnstone, and was first manager of the "Herald," from the offices of which meantime there was also published "The Fisherman", a popular paper which (incidentally) might with advantage have been perpetuated."

THE Very First Fraserburgh Herald appeared on Wednesday, March 26, 1884.
