Grant boost for Cairnbulg Harbour development

LAST week, Cairnbulg Harbour Committee were successful in achieving further funding for their marina development project.

Rural Aberdeenshire LEADER Programme have awarded the project 10,000 towards their community-led harbour development, which aims to deepen the existing basin and install a pontoon system as previously reported in this newspaper.

LEADER is a new funding body made up of Aberdeenshire council, EU and Scottish Government bodies, who back and develop rural projects within the community.

Michael Summers, harbour committee chairman, expressed his delight on the news of the grant award:

"A tremendous amount of work has taken place to achieve this and other grants which has made this project achievable and will now elevate the harbour to be a viable facility for all types of sea born tourism along the inner Moray Firth".

"Years of exhaustive fund raising efforts are finally being turned into physical actions which will bring tangible results to the two communities and their immediate surroundings"

This is the fourth grant to be awarded to the project after presentations were submitted to the various organisations, Big Lottery will fund 65, 000, Aberdeenshire top up fund 5,000 and Aberdeenshire council a further 5,000.

"Built on top of organisational funding, the communities of Cairnbulg and Inverallochy have arranged annual bonfires and coffee mornings to get this project off the starting blocks.

In addition the ever popular Invercairn Gala backed and financially supported the project, all with an aim to build a financial war chest with which to pursue the then distant dream of a functional marina," Mr Summers added.

Work to develop this project began earlier this month to coincide with the tidal conditions necessary to achieve the deepening aims.
