James is a real marathon man
A member of the Fraserburgh Lifeboat crew has begun a gruelling challenge this week to raise money for the RNLI.
James Taylor (36) started his challenge of completing six marathons in six days on Tuesday, when he ran out from the Broch to beyond Strichen.
He told the Herald: "I was originally going to run from Fraserburgh to Ullapool, but had problems arranging a support car, so decided instead to run six marathons from Fraserburgh on six successive days".
James is crewman and navigator on the 'Willie and May Gall' and has been a member of the Fraserburgh crew for four years.
His ambition is to complete the 156 miles to raise funds for the RNLI:
"I am hoping to finish on Sunday afternoon. I think it will take me five to six hours per day, so just as long as I finish," he said.
James only started running earlier this year, but has been covering between 30 to 50 miles per day.
He said: "The guys on the rig, Ocean Princess, where I work have been really very good and allowed me to use the treadmill. I am hoping to raise money for the RNLI and anything over 1,000 I would be happy with.
"If anyone wants to make a donation they can call into the Station," he added.
James explained that he had wanted to challenge himself, saying: "I thought this would be a really good fundraiser, but I also really wanted to challenge myself and wanted to do something a bit different," James added.
Coxswain Victor Sutherland praised James's fundraising efforts, acknowledging that his crewmate was attempting a huge physwical and mental challenge.
He said that the entire crew admired what James was setting out to accomplish: "It is just brilliant that James is doing this.
"It will be a massive test for him, but given the commitment and dedication he has shown to the station, I think he will rise to the challenge. Best of luck to him.
"James realises the importance of raising the awareness of the RNLI and how important the support we get from the public is," said Victor.
