Jimmy selected to stand for Scottish Parliament
TRAWLERMEN star and Peterhead skipper Jimmy Buchan is to throw his hat into the political ring for the second time in a year.
Jimmy was selected by the Scottish Conservatives to stand for the new Banffshire and Buchan Coast Seat at next year's Scottish Parliament elections.
Having slashed the SNP majority in the Westminster Election earlier this year, Jimmy, who is soon to publish his autobiography, said after Tuesday night's meeting: "I am delighted to be selected to contest the new constituency of Banffshire and Buchan Coast.
"Having been born and brought up in a coastal town this coastal constituency is very much suited to me and my solid local knowledge.
"Knowledge of the fishing industry may be one of my strengths, and it goes without saying that I would fight endlessly for my colleagues throughout the Scottish fishing industry, however, I pledge that I will work hard to represent every sector of the Banffshire and Buchan Coast which has a vast array of businesses and talent.
"The area has much to offer and it is my desire to see that opportunities and resources are channelled to this area so that we can secure jobs for the immediate and long-term prosperity of our coastal constituency.
"For too long I have seen our towns and villages become a shadow of their former selves as young people leave their roots to chase work in the cities. It will be our duty to see that inward investment is created and we see our towns and villages as thriving and happy areas in which to work and live."
He added: "I am looking forward to the election in May next year when the electorate get the opportunity to select who they want to represent them at Holyrood. In the meantime I will be listening with great interest to what you the electorate want for the future."
Commenting on Jimmy's selection, Struan Stevenson, Conservative Euro MP for Scotland said: "It is great news for Scotland's fishermen and great news for the Scottish Conservatives that Jimmy Buchan has been selected for the Holyrood elections.
"He is a stalwart campaigner who scored a spectacular result at the General Election with one of the biggest swings to the Tories in Britain, narrowly missing out on victory. But Westminster's loss will be Holyrood's gain. With more than 35 years experience at sea, Jimmy's knowledge of Scotland's fisheries sector will be an invaluable asset at a time when our fishermen are facing some of the greatest challenges for decades."
