KInnaird Castle to come to life
Kinnaird Head castle at The Museum of Scottish Lighthouses will be the scene of a living history performance on 28th June as part of Historic Scotland's 'Following in the Family Footsteps' for Homecoming Scotland. Kinnaird Head Lighthouse stands on the site of a castle built by the Fraser family in the 15th century.
Although never the main family home, the castle performed an important role in the development of the town of Fraserburgh from the fishing community of Faithlie.
The castle was in disrepair when the Northern Lighthouse Board were looking for a site for their first lighthouse.
The castle formed an ideal base and when the lighthouse was refurbished in 1824, the main castle tower as visitors see it today was retained.
'Following in the Family Footsteps' also includes heritage trails. These are a quick guide to some of the wonderful historic sites linked to 15 famous Scottish clans including the Frasers.
They can be printed out from the Historic Scotland website and used for ideas on a whole variety of great places for a day out. Each guide carries brief introductions to the clan and to some of the many fascinating characters linked to its history.
There is also a map showing attractions which have connections to the clan.
The performer from Historic Scotland will tell the stories of this part of Kinnaird Head's history in sessions at 12.45, 13.45, 14.45 and 15.45. Usual ticket prices apply.
