Let there be light at the fountain: councillor

An appeal has been made for suggestions as to how a fountain in Fraserburgh could be lit up.
Councillor Ian Tait hopes members of the public will come forward with ideas on illuminating the grade B listed building at Saltoun Square.
The fountain, which is made of wrought iron, is situated beside the town’s Saltoun Place Gardens and play park.
Commenting, Cllr Tait said: “I have spoken with council officers about how we could light up the fountain and they have looked into it.
“The council is willing to illuminate it. There would be no difficulty in getting the electric power to do it. However, council officers tell me the light would simply pass through and the lighting would not enhance the structure at all. The problem is the loss of light though its open framework. So if anyone can advise me of what could be done, I would be most grateful.
“A few years ago, I got the council to install new play equipment and lighting there and it is now a very good and well used play park.
“Locally we call the gardens the “Granda’s swings” because of the play area that was put up here. Some people say this name is derived from the name “Granders swings” because the area was orginally used as a walk by the “grand” or well off people of the town.
“It would be nice to see it lit up. It’s part of our heritage and it would be good to see it displayed to its best advantage.”
At the top of the fountain, there is an ostrich with a key in its mouth and the Latin motto “Sapientia Clavis Vitae” which translates as “Wisdom is the key to life”.
