Lightouse museum intern needs YOUR help
LOCAL people are being invited to give their views on how Fraserburgh's heritage is being promoted and safe-guarded.
Research student Rachael Bowen is particularly keen to hear people's views regarding the Broch fishing and maritime heritage.
A student at Newcastle University, Rachael is currently studying for a Masters Degree in Heritage Management. She is currently an Intern at the Museum of Scottish Lighthouses:
"My research question focuses on the heritage resources available within Fraserburgh relating to the fishing and maritime industries. My aim is to explore whether Fraserburgh's fishing and maritime heritage resources successfully enhance community sustainability, identity, memory and sense of place for the local populace.
"The heritage resources I am focusing on are the Museum of Scottish Lighthouses and Fraserburgh Heritage Centre, including the Heritage Society and local library," she told the Herald.
Rachael explained that she had a number of objectives she hoped to realise. These are:
To determine the importance of fishing within Fraserburgh's past and present
To explore how the heritage resources have been used to provide monuments to Fraserburgh's declining fishing and maritime industries
To determine the reaction of local people to the resources on offer
To assess the positive and negative impacts of heritage in the area
To assess the role of heritage to the regional tourist industry
As well as speaking to people involved in working at the Heritage Centre and the Museum of Scottish Lighthouses, Rachael is looking to talk to local people about their views: "I am currently preparing to conduct a brief survey questionnaire to get a basic idea of visitor numbers, where visitors are coming from (and going to) and whether these visitors feel these heritage sites are successful resources for Fraserburgh.
"I want to be able to document the success, or otherwise, of the heritage resources in Fraserburgh and assess the 'coping strategy' of the town with regards to the gradual decline of the fishing industry."
Rachael can be contacted by phone on 07891585834 or email: r.e.bowen@ncl.ac.uk:
"If people could leave a message that would be great and then we can arrange to meet up," Rachael added.
