Massive mesh net fitted to protect Pennan from further landslides
A HUGE mesh net has now been secured to the front of the face of a crumbling cliff face above the village of Pennan completing the last phase of works to stablise the area.
A spokesperson for Aberdeenshire Council told the Herald: "The work to stablise the braes at Pennan was completed last Wednesday.
"The procedure involved securing a mesh across the entire area by inserting 10metre-long 'soil nails' in a series of rows along the slope above the road."
Contractors for Aberdeenshire Council have been busy driving soil nails into the slope following the discovery of a 25metre crack in November.
There were fears that the crack could have led to a landslip which could block the only access road to the village, although there was through to be no risk to homes.
The nails were inserted into the soil by two drilling rigs, and drainage was required on an area of softer ground which couldn't initially couldn't support them.
A drainage system was installed into the slope and will remaining place over the course of the Christmas holidays to allow trapped water to drain out.
A council spokesperson added that the original aim was to have had the work completed by Christmas, but works of this type can often uncover issues that have to be dealt with as they arose.
