MORE than 200 people attended the fourth annual FISSH Midsummer Ball on Saturday evening, raising around £10,000 towards facilities for Fraserburgh’s new swimming pool, sport and community complex.
The group’s chairperson, Doreen Mair told the Herald: “We had a wonderful night and raised a fantastic amount. We need to raise a further £50,000 towards the flume that we want to see installed at the new complex and this is a great start.
“Our top auction for the evening was for the honour of cutting the ‘first Sod’ on the new complex construction site in July.
“C&A West kindly donated a top-of-the-range stainless steel spade which the lucky winner will keep and we will have engraved. There will also be a named commemorative plaque placed on the acknowledgements wall of the new complex.
“The winning bid came from John Simpson of Fraserburgh Car Sales, who will cut the first sod in July.”
The leisure centre hall was transformed with a bit of artistic flair from the ball committee and the revellers began the evening with a champagne reception.
Doreen continued: “As happens every year the atmosphere was amazing from the start, with people telling me they had been looking forward to the ball for weeks.
“Some folk had been asking, before the event, who our guest of honour was this year. Well on the night we let them into the secret, it was each and everyone of the people who came along and enjoyed the evening and have done so from the very beginning of the project.
“It is only with their help and the help of the rest of the local community that this project has been so successful.
“Thanks to all our guests for coming along, it was a simply wonderful night, the band ‘Pepperpot’ did a fantastic job, the dance floor never emptied, and they told me later they had thoroughly enjoyed playing for such an appreciative audience.
“To see so many happy faces throughout the evening made organising the event so worthwhile in many more ways than the fundraising aspect.
“The meal provided by the leisure centre and the service throughout the evening was first class, thanks to David Watt and his staff for all their hard work.
“Also due huge thanks are the companies who provided the auction items, prizes and equipment for the evening. ,namely: The Tufted Duck Hotel, St. Combs, Total E & P UK Ltd., The Christina S FR220, Terry Buchan of Meldrum House Golf Club, G. & J. Jack Ltd, Youngs Seafood, Aberdeenshire Council, Fraserburgh Football Club, Ground Prep Ltd. Abbeyfield Lodge, C & A Wests’ Garden Shop, Rodgers Electrical, Hush Hair & Beauty, the Brentwood Hotel, Aberdeen FR911 Kerri Lee and Fraserburgh Engineering. Without their fantastic support this evening would not have been the success it was.
“The huge selection of great raffle prizes that were donated by local shops, companies and individuals to provide a quality raffle draw also helped tremendously to boost the evenings’ success so once again Thanks!
“Also thanks to Santander who, for the third year in a row ‘match funded’ our evening to the total of £1,500 because two of their employees, Kelly Pearson and Alyssa Duthie are on our ball committee. This is a huge help enabling us to achieve such a wonderful sum on the night.
“Already tables are being reserved for next year’s ball, which is on June 23, with ‘Picture This’ returning as the entertainment.”
FISSH will be holding more fundraising events in the near future including a ‘Name the Flume’ competition, with the winner being given the honour of the first person down the flume on the opening day.
Doreen continued: “We are holding a fun day on Sunday September 4 at Fraserburgh Community Centre and Academy Playing Fields to launch our ‘Splash for Cash’ Swimathon Week, there will be lots of entertainment on the day for everyone to enjoy.
“It is not too late for people to get involved in ‘Splash for Cash’ either so get your sponsors and get fit at the same time, if you don’t swim why not get people to sponsor your jogging, running, walking or cycling for the week! Information leaflets and sponsor forms are available from Mhairi on 541373, Doreen on 514096 or from the swimming pool
“In November we will be holding a Ladies Night at the Leisure Centre complete with fashion show by M & Co, pampering sessions, stalls, disco and hopefully Bollywood Dancers. Tickets will be going on sale for that shortly.”
