New facility at Academy

FRASERBURGH Academy officially opened its new Hospitality Restaurant and Kitchen area recently.

FRASERBURGH Academy officially opened its new Hospitality Restaurant and Kitchen area recently.

Education, Learning and Leisure Director Bruce Robertson, Head of Service Wilf Weir and Quality Improvement Officer John Graham together with members from the Education Learning and Leisure Committee will attend the opening, which was carried out by Councillor Richard Stroud.

The new 130,000 facilities will enable pupils to become familiar with and develop the skills that will allow them to work in a fully equipped, professional restaurant kitchen, as well as provide vocational opportunities and training.

In addition, staff and pupils within the school's technical department are manufacturing the furniture for the restaurant and the artwork on display is the work of pupils in the art department.

Fraserburgh Academy Depute Rector, Don Hawkins, said: "We wish to provide opportunities for staff and young people to develop and demonstrate enterprising attitudes and leadership skills in seeking continuous improvement.

"These new facilities will help us develop partnerships that enable us to support our young people and provide an education that allows them to develop their abilities, personality and talents to their fullest potential.

The construction of the hospitality kitchen has been made possible due to the school's business partnership with ESS, who have utilised the facility for classroom teaching, Future Chef competitions and training ESS chefs.

Discussions have also taken place with the Banff and Buchan College of Further Education (BBCFE), who will start providing a vocational course in Hospitality from August 2008, through utilising the new facilities.

The BBCFE have also expressed an interested in using the hospitality kitchen and restaurant to supplement the course they currently offer, further enhancing the partnership with the school.
