One of the best harbour presentation nights ever!
MEMBERS of the Fraserburgh fishing community gathered last Saturday for the annual harbour presentation night.
The event, held at the Tufted Duck, saw the presentation of the Maitland Trophy and the MacRae Stephen Trophy.
MC for the evening was George MacRae MBE, clerk to Fraserburgh Harbour Board.
He said that the event had been a great success, saying: "The entire evening went very well. It was one of the best presentations that we have had."
Guest speakers at the event were Anne Buchan, daughter of the late Peter Buchan, a North-east writer and poet steeped in the fishing industry, and Scotland's First Minister Alex Salmond MP and MSP.
"Anne Buchan was excellent. She recited some of her father's poem and it was first class, combined with a humorous and excellent speech from the First Minister," added Mr MacRae.
Harbour Board convenor George Sutherland MBE spoke of the role the fishing industry plays in the lifeblood of the town and outlined future plans for development.
The Maitland Trophy is awarded annually to the most successful vessel over 18 metres in length. This year the winner was the MV Rebecca (FR 143). Mrs Bette Maitland presented the award to skipper Adam Tait.
The MacRae Stephen Trophy, which recognises the most successful boat under 18 metres in length, was presented by Mr Archie Miller of MacRae Stephen to John Bremner, skipper of MV Sunlight Ray (WY 101).
The trophies were revived three years ago and now form one of the centrepieces in the Fraserburgh fishing calendar.
"Historically, there was the Maitland Trophy and the Fraserburgh Town Council Trophy, but the town has, sadly, not had a Town Council since 1975," said Mr MacRae.
"So, the trophies were revived, as the Maitland Trophy and the MacRae Stephen Trophy. We were very grateful to Mrs Bette Maitland and Mr Archie Miller, Secretary to the Scottish White Fish Producers, for making the presentations."
Two further presentations were made on the night. Graham Taylor of Westward Fishing Company made a special presentation to the crew of the Rebecca.
"We are just delighted. Congratulations to Adam, his crew and family," said Mr Taylor.
The crew of the Sunlight Ray were also recipients, when the chairman of Fraserburgh Inshore Fishermen, James Reid, made a presentation to them.
