Shock as family discover gravestone has been stolen
GONE: The gravestone that Robert McLeman chose himself has been stolen from Kirkton Cemetery.
A Fraserburgh family have been left disgusted after the theft of a loved one’s headstone.
Earlier this month, as they preopared to lay their grandfather Robert McLeman to rest, they discovered on the day of the funeral that the gravestone had been stolen from Kirkton Cemetery.
Mr McLeman had purchased his own gravestone in advance, and speaking to the Fraserburgh Herald last week, his grandson, Colin McLeman, told us that it was still missing from the site.
He said: “The undertaker made us aware of what happened. It was horrible. My grandfather purchased the stone and checked it himself,” Mr McLeman said.
He added it was the second stone at Kirkton to go missing, saying: “We are going to buy another gravestone. The most annoying thing is that it was the stone my late grandfather picked himself. Even if we find a similar gravestone, it won’t be the one he chose.”
Head of Roads and Landscape Services at Aberdeenshire Council, Philip McKay, said: “The incident has been reported to the Grampian Police and we will cooperate with any investigation. A similar incident of a stolen headstone happened previously at this location and as a result staff have been alerted and will remain vigilant in looking out for suspicious behaviour when maintaining the grounds.
“Any vandalism to lairs causes distress for those families concerned and I would urge anyone in the community with further information about the recent theft to contact Grampian Police.”
