VOLUNTEERING: Local MSP Stewart Stevenson and Barnardo's shop manager Mandy Ross price tagging clothes for sale

Local MSP Stewart Stevenson lended a helping hand at Barnardo’s in Peterhead on Friday, October 26.

His appearance at the Errol Street store was part of the charity’s ‘Make a Difference Day’ in which they encourage people to consider volunteering.

It is hoped the scheme will carry on through the Christmas period as this is the busiest time for charity shops.

Mr Stevenson gave up one hour of his time to help shop manager Mandy Ross and he was expected to take on a range of duties.

Speaking to the Buchanie, Mandy said: “We will be sorting through donations, putting prices on them and getting them out in the shop, checking and steaming clothes to put on sale and handing out sweets to any kids that come in.

“We have loads of toys due to the Argos Toy Exchange that is on at the moment.”

On Mr Stevenson’s appearance at the store she added: “I hope he can get across to people and hopefully we will gain extra volunteers.

“It is good for work experience or somewhere to start if you have never worked in a shop before. You also make new friends and some people do it for that reason alone.”

Mr Stevenson was looking forward to helping out and he said: “It is good to get engaged with people, it is a terrific job for the community, it will be great fun and something I want to support.”

When asked about volunteering Mr Stevenson said: “It is something to enjoy, a good way to meet people, it supports good causes and there are many opportunities for people to discover when it comes to volunteering.”
