Teen Open Day fun at Sunnybrae
On the last Saturday in August, hundreds of people headed for the Teen Challenge Sunnybrae Drugs Rehabilitation Centre for their annual open day.
This year saw the greatest number of people ever as former residents, parents of past and present residents, individuals and supporters from many churches and organisations gathered for an informal catch up of the developments in the centre and the lives of residents.
The programme at Teen Challenge includes different courses including Life / Job Skills Course and Teen Challenge fourteen curriculum studies course and six men were presented with their certificates for completing their courses.
As well as the courses, residents undertake there are also numerous projects the men are involved in and on display on the day were garden sheds and car trailers made by the residents as a means of creating revenue and part of the programme aimed at getting them into a work routine. People had the opportunity to stroll through the vegetable gardens and see the chickens the residents raised.
Showers threatened the day, but held back until the end of the afternoon, but that did not deter from the entertainment laid on for the children. These included pony rides, bouncy castle, simulated surfing, football, putting, etc.
This day was well planned with activities for the children and an informative talk by Gordon Cruden, manager of the complex.
Food was of the usual high standard made and provided by residents and supporters of Teen Challenge Sunnybrae.
A full barbecue was also on offer as was fresh made pancakes, pasta and delicacies too numerous to mention. As people tasted the buffet and the delicious sweets, they mingled exchanging stories, updating on developments and viewing the excellent facilities.
However most of all, Teen Challenge Sunnybrae is about seeing men's lives restored mentally, physically and spiritually and preparing them to fit back into work and society as a whole.
