The Cross Still Stands at the Solid Rock Cafe

The Solid Rock Cafe is to have an evening of celebration to mark ten years of ministry in the North-east.

To mark this milestone local artists and musicians are coming together for a one off performance at Fraserburgh AOG at 7.30pm on Saturday, September 18.

For more than ten years, the Solid Rock Cafe has been at the heart of Fraserburgh's town centre offering help for people with life controlling problems.

The cafe was set up by volunteers from various local churches to offer a solution to the town's severe drug problem. Since the doors of Solid Rock opened at the beginning of the millennium hundreds have used the service and many lives have been changed.

The cafe operates as a drop in throughout the week while also providing one-to-one appointments for those who are preparing to go to a rehabilitation centre. The scope of the ministry stretches as far south as Perthshire and reaches up to the most northerly part of the mainland in Caithness.

Predominately the work involves building relationships, offering support, counselling and preparing people for rehab. However, Solid Rock also provide drug prevention seminars for local schools and youth groups raising awareness and highlighting the dangers of drug abuse.

Solid Rock relies on the generosity of kindhearted locals whose donations cover the costs of providing the service. Every year Solid Rock holds a fundraiser which is an opportunity for people to donate financially to the cause.

Previously there has been the popular Solid Rock Gala, and more recently three locals collected sponsors and ran the London marathon. This year something different is planned, a musical concert.

The theme of the concert is "The Cross Still Stands" and will consist of local artists performing both well known hymns from the past and contemporary worship songs which focus on the Cross.

The line-up and song list has been carefully chosen to appeal to all ages. The soloists and choir will be accompanied by a live band which features musicians from various local churches.

During the concert there will be a chance to hear powerful life stories of people who have been impacted by the ministry of Solid Rock and an opportunity for people to sew into the work of the cafe.

Senior Support Worker Paul Innes said: "Over the years local people have been faithful in their support of the cafe and it's down to their contribution that the work goes on and life's continue to be impacted.

"We are very excited about this fundraiser which promises to be an awesome evening which I'm sure everyone will enjoy. I'd like thank everyone who has been working hard behind the scenes over the past months to make this is an evening to be remembered.

"We would love to see as much of people on the night as possible to join us as we celebrate the success of life's that have been changed through the work of the cafe."
