Thieves target lifeboat

SMASHED: Two windows were broken by the thieves.

Thieves smashed their way into the station at Macduff where they ransacked the shop till and stole hand-held VHF radios.

The theft has caused huge inconvenience to the charity.

Another radio had to be brought over from the lifeboat station at Buckie, and other replacements will arrive at the lifeboat station in Macduff as soon as possible.

However, the RNLI emphasised that the charity remained fully operational and the volunteers could still launch the lifeboat and carry out rescues at sea.

It is believed that the break-in took place between between midnight and 6:45am on Thursday, October 18.

A small amount of cash was stolen from the shop and a window blind was damaged. Four hand-held radios and charger sets, worth £500 each, and additional microphones were stolen.

The total value of the stolen equipment is nearly £3,000.

Three of these radios are used by the RNLI’s volunteer shore crew to help with the launch of the lifeboat.

They are also used, for example, if the RNLI assist the Coastguard with shoreline searches. The fourth radio is a back-up for the radios on the
lifeboat.
