Trio of events to help fund Olivia's vital treatment
THREE fundraisers to pay for a five-year-old Broch girl to go to Germany for pioneering trials in a new immunology cancer treatment have been confirmed.
Five-year-old Olivia Downie of Caledonia Court, has already been through 15 months of gruelling cancer treatments in Aberdeen and Glasgow to treat her neuroblasgtoma, a rare and aggressive form of childhood cancer, which developed into a tumour from a rogue gene, which she was born with.
As the Herald revealed last week, her parents Lauren and Steven have been given the opportunity to take their daughter to Germany in the summer to take part in a trial for a new immunotherapy treatment, which should improve her chances of surviving the cancer from 20% to 40-50%.
But the costs involved in making the trip, including travel, accommodation and possible treatment costs could be as much as 40,000 Euro's or around 36,000. The family are still waiting to hear if they need to pay for the treatment or whether this cost will be covered, so they have decided to hold a fundraiser next month.
The three events which are planned are a 'Broch's Got Talent' evening and a 'Fun Day' in June and a 'Sponsored Waxing' in July.
The family, with the help and support of family and friends, are planning a Fun Day, which will be held in the garden area at the rear of Cheers in Fraserburgh's Broad Street kicking off at 2.30pm on Saturday, June 26.
The fun day will feature a bouncy castle and face painting for the children, as well as various people who are being sponsored to be waxed.People having their heads shaved.
There will fancy dress competitions, haggle stall,a fortune teller, bottle stalls,a range of raffles, hook the duck, home baked goods, a candy stall while a local band will play to visitors throughout the afternoon, plus a whole lot more.
Two family members, Janet Jordan and Lorraine Thomson have also volunteered to have their heads shaved at the fun day to raise extra cash.
Lauren told the Herald that knowing that other care has been a real source of comfort and support to them at this time: "There are such compassionate caring people out there and although it affects Olivia me and Steven the most, we are not alone in this battle.
"It's been surprising how helpful and considerate everyone has been and we hope this continues. It's a huge help and is brilliant that everyone's coming together."
As well as a fun day, Lauren's friend Lynne Simpson is organising a Broch's Got Talent Show at the Dalrymple Hall and Arts Centre on Friday, June 25, starting at 7pm.
Lynne said: "We are looking for groups soloists, singers dancers, people who play musical instruments, variety acts, comedians etc aged five to 100!
