Trio to climb Kilimanjaro for charity

A trio of fund-raisers are to climb Kilimanjaro for five good causes.

Siblings Catherine Stuart and Tom Robertson are teaming up with their friend Phil MacIver to undertake the mammoth challenge called the ‘Kiltiemanjaro KiltWalk’. Together they hope to raise as much as possible for Aberlour, Children’s Hospice Association Scotland, CLIC Sargent, Tartan Army Children’s Charity and the Westfield School Special Fund.

Tom (65) lives in New Pitsligo, while Catherine (57) and Phil (62) live in Turriff.

The three fund-raisers will climb Kilimanjaro over six days in October this year, walking a total of 37 miles. And, as the name of the challenge suggests, they will complete the climb wearing kilts.

Catherine, Tom and Phil will sleep in tents during the trip, despite temperatures potentially reaching as low as -20oC.

The trio found out about the expedition through an advert in a Sunday newspaper last November.

Catherine and Tom are no strangers to physical challenges, having climbed all the Monroes in Scotland, something which has helped them prepare for Kilimanjaro. They finished climbing the Monroes in September last year with their family, who also took part. Catherine’s son, Jamie, carried her nine-month-old grandson, Ryan, on his back for the trek.

To make the walk up Kilimanjaro extra special, a piper from Aviemore will be accompanying the fund-raisers on the trip - and Tom will be addressing the haggis.

To help raise funds, Catherine, Tom and Phil are hosting a Quiz Night, including an auction, at The Royal Oak, Turriff. The event is to be held on Friday, April 26 with a 7pm for 7.30 start. Amongst the auction items will include a signed AC/DC photo and football items.

Commenting on their fund-raising challenge, Catherine said: “I’ve had a great response from workers and businesses. My friend and I went round a few of the pubs and got a great response.”

Tom added: “We’ve had a great response. We’d like to thank everyone who has donated up to now.”
