Villagers flock to Strichen community event
THE ORGANISERS of the Strichen Community Park Fun Day were delighted with the "excellent turnout" of visitors to their event on Sunday afternoon, which aimed to raise money for the park's upkeep.
A committee spokesperson told 'The Herald':
"We were very lucky with the weather on the day - it didn't rain, and we had the occasional blink of sun, although a fierce wind did cause one or two problems.
"There was an excellent turnout from both local villagers, Brochers, and others, and the financial return was more than a just reward for the directors and willing helpers who turned out to help make the day a success. So we would like to say a big thank you to Stewart Whyte and family for their excellent entertainment, to Gammack Coutts who supplied the music stage and barbecue equipment, to Bert and Hebbie Fowlie for their generous donation of burgers, and especially to all the directors of the park and the helpers who turned out on the day, giving up their Sunday to help raise funds for the park and for the future refurbishment of the old Lodge."
Meanwhile, the event's organisers are on the lookout for some old mobile toilets, which are maybe past their best and could do with a bit of TLC for temporary facilities next year.
The group have had to hire toilets in the past, which they say takes a chunk off their funds.
Strichen Community Park is wholly owned by the residents of the village, administered by a committee of local people. The committee is chaired by Elizabeth Taylor, who farms at Clayfords, Strichen, with her family, and is maintained by a few local volunteers.
Although many improvements have been carried out within the park over the years, the committee is now embarking on the refurbishment of the Lodge at the entrance at the park.
This lodge was formerly the gatehouse to the estates of the former Strichen House, (owned by the Frasers of Strichen), but has now been reduced to dereliction.
The committee would like to see it being rebuilt and have plans to convert the building to a seasonal cafe, with a small exhibition area with historical facts of the area and information about the wildlife, and disabled toilets. To this end, the group has been granted funding for a feasibility study.
If the committee is successful with the application to the Big Lottery Fund for funding the refurbishment of the building, they will be required to meet part of the total cost, (believed to be about 250,000,) and this now will be the main focus of their fundraising.
