World record for North-east academy

Pupils and staff at Ellon Academy have received official confirmation that they have set the new Guinness World Records title for ’Largest Superman Dance’.

Pupils and staff performed a mass dance at the Deer Park last September to ‘Superman’ by Black Lace. They were led on stage by Sergeant Stuart Law from the Royal Marines, Chief Petty Officer Peter Box from the Royal Navy, Deputy Head Prefect Josh Brock and Rector Tim McKay

A total of 880 staff and pupils participated, dressed in at least two items of 1980s fancy dress. A wide range of representatives from the local community verified that participants danced correctly in order to meet the criteria for record.

Over 100 pupil volunteers gained the national Saltire Challenge Award, the first pupils in Aberdeenshire to do so, for their voluntary service to support the school’s Fundraising Committee. Their work included organising and running the ‘Party in the Park’ featuring the record-breaking dance. Ellon Academy raised over £7600 for school funds from sponsorship of the dance and stalls held at the event.

Depute Rector Kim Hall said: “This event was part of a whole school Citizenship and Enterprise fundraising day to promote positive activities for young people to do in their spare time.

“It is a fantastic achievement, demonstrating clearly the excellent working relationships between young people and staff in Ellon Academy and with our community and business partners.

“The school’s Fundraising Committee and pupil volunteers who organised and ran the day should be very proud. We would like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to everyone who supported the school.”

Acting Rector Glynis McClymont added: “Ellon Academy continues to be a world record-breaking school - this is our third Guinness World Records entry during my time at the school and I am sure the tradition will continue!”
