Buchan butchers win top pie awards

Bruce of the Broch has won gold awards for two of their products, beating around 550 entries from across the UK in the process.

The long-established butcher picked up gold awards for the best steak pie and best smoked haddock pie in the 15th World Scotch Pie Championships.

Separately, the Fraserburgh butcher also won bronze and gold awards for their steak pie in the football pies section.

Their success means Bruce of the Broch have now won gold awards for both their steak pie and smoked haddock pie in three of the last four years.

There was also good news for Bert Fowlie of Strichen who won a bronze award in the apple pie category.

Results of the competition were announced last week but the judging took place in November last year. Two weeks after judging, those in line for an award were visited by a ‘secret shopper’ who bought and sampled the nominated pies.

The competition, which is based in Dunfermline, featured 100 butchers and bakers who submitted around 550 entries. Although open to producers from across the UK, the entrants were predominantly Scottish.

The competition is supported by Scottish Bakers and the Scottish Federation of Meat Traders.

Alistair Bruce commented: “We are delighted with our win and can go away with our heads held very high indeed.

“To have been judged as one of the best in the land against so many of our peers is a huge achievement.”

“We are consistently the best for the steak pie, something which we’re really proud of,” he added.

Hebbie Fowlie from Bert Fowlie Butchers said: “It was a pleasant surprise to win the bronze prize for the apple pie. Our baker, Gary Craib, is pleased with his success.”
