Aberdeenshire East MSP Alex Salmond has welcomed a £5million investment to help with the redesign of classrooms into creative learning spaces.

The Scottish Government’s Inspiring Learning Spaces will aid open and flexible learning and enable closer partnerships between schools and further education, in line with Curriculum for Excellence.

The investment complements the £1.25billion Schools for the Future programme which has already received £800million from the Scottish Government. Construction of the new £36million Ellon Community Campus – which received £25million from the fund – began last year and is on target to be completed in Autumn 2015.

Through the Schools for the Future Programme, 67 new schools will be built across Scotland by March 2018 to replace those in the poorest condition. By the beginning of 2017 every local authority will have at least one new school under construction or open to pupils.

Mr Salmond said: “This investment will help to create some fantastic spaces for pupils in the north-east and across Scotland to learn and be inspired in.

“Our young people will go on to shape Scotland’s future and we want our local authorities and colleges to be ambitious in producing the best possible environment.

“I am delighted that the funding can go towards encouraging integrated learning spaces between schools and further education,” he added.
