A well-known Forfar wood turner is passing on his skills to a group of pupils at Forfar Academy in a first for Scotland.
Peter Fordyce is a regular face at craft events and he was approached a few months ago by Stuart Mortimer of the Association of Wood Turners of Great Britain to see if he would be interested in setting up a youth training programme in Forfar. There are quite a few in England and Wales, but this would be the first in this country.
Stuart is the passionate driving force behind the training scheme and he very kindly interrupted his holiday in Aberdeenshire to come to Forfar on Friday to demonstrate his considerable turning skills to two very appreciative classes.
Next week, Peter and two fellow turner volunteers will hold a two-day vocational training course at the school teaching basic turning skills.
This will hopefully be followed by further training days for the really interested students with the intention of forming a youth wood-turning club at the school, with the blessing of Mervyn Lynch, head teacher, and the technical staff.
