Police Scotland have confirmed the deaths of a man and a woman following a collision on the A952 Mintlaw to Fraserburgh road.

At around 6.20pm on Monday, February 10, police attended a report of a serious two vehicle road traffic collision on the Mintlaw to Fraserburgh road near the Hythie junction.

The A952 was closed between Mintlaw and the Cortes junction to enable the emergency services to deal with the incident.

Police later confirmed the male driver and a female passenger in one of the vehicles involved in the collision suffered fatal injuries.

A spokesperson from Police Scotland said: “We can confirm the identity of the man and woman who died in a road traffic collision on the A952 near Mintlaw on Monday 10 February, as 80-year-old Dennis Morrice and 77-year-old Margaret Watson, who were both from the Fraserburgh area.”

The male driver of the other vehicle was conveyed by ambulance to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary where he was being treated for serious injuries.

There were no further casualties involved.

The vehicles involved were a red Vauxhall Corsa and a white Vauxhall Corsa van.

The road was closed for approximately six hours to enable collision investigators to carry out a detailed examination of the locus.

Fraserburgh councillor Brian Topping commented: “Very sadly, we’ve seen another tragedy on our roads.

“My heartfelt sympathies go out to the friends and family of the two people who sadly lost their lives in the crash. We also wish the driver of the van a speedy recovery.

“There seems to be far too many accidents on our roads, it’s very disappointing.

“As members of the public and councillors, we don’t know the cause of the accident so we need to let the police carry out their investigations. But if we can learn lessons from this, so much the better.”

Roads Policing Sergeant David Pirie said: “I would appeal to anyone who witnessed either of the vehicles being driven near the locus around the time of the collision, which occurred on the A952 Cortes to Mintlaw road near Hythie, to come forward.

“We are keen to establish the full facts and circumstances to identify the cause of this tragedy and our condolences go out to the families of those involved at this very difficult time.”

Anyone who may have witnessed the collision and has not already spoken to police is asked to call Police Scotland on 101.
