A group of pupils from Tyrie School have been presented with an award for their ongoing commitment to volunteering.

Seven Tyrie pupils were recognised for their volunteering work recently and were presented with the Bronze Level of the Young Aberdeenshire Volunteer Award.

Feeding the birds in the Eco-garden, checking taps are turned off properly, switching off lights where possible and picking up litter in the playground are just some of the duties that pupils at Tyrie School have undertaken during their break times and lunch times.

As well as their eco-duties, the pupils have taken part in a number of volunteering duties at school or in the local community, including buddy responsibility for younger pupils and entertaining the public at a school concert.

All the pupils at the school are working through the award scheme which begins at the Bronze level of 10 hours and finishes at the Platinum level of 45 hours and over.

The awards are attainable every academic year for all youngsters aged 5 to 15 years within Aberdeenshire. The award is promoted and administrated by the Volunteer Centre Aberdeenshire (VCA) and is supported by the Aberdeenshire Community Planning Partnership. The initiative encourages those taking part to be responsible citizens and effective contributors.

Head teacher Mrs Nicola Ogston commented: “Staff at the school fully supports the award scheme as it encourages pupils to think about ways in which they can help others.

“The pupils have ownership over the time that they spend on activities and rarely need to be encouraged to volunteer – it is now something that they do without thinking. Our involvement in the volunteering award supports our implementation of Curriculum for Excellence.”

Commenting, one of the pupils who received an award last week said: “Volunteering is fun and it teaches you to be responsible and a good citizen.”

The Volunteer Centre Aberdeenshire would like community groups and local charities that offer volunteering opportunities to young people to support this award.
