Ellon Academy welcomed back a special visitor for its first creative arts awards ceremony.
Yvie Burnett, of X Factor and The Voice fame among others, returned to her former school last week to present the honours.
Pupils and staff were thrilled when the popular vocal coach accepted the invitation to attend the ceremony.
The awards are the idea of sixth year pupil Kirsty Fraser, who wanted to recognise pupils’ dedication and commitment to the many extra curricular activities on offer at the school in art, music and drama.
Yvie said that it was her experience at Ellon Academy attending extra curricular music and drama clubs that inspired her to take up singing as a career and she encouraged today’s pupils to have the confidence to follow their dream.
A total of 97 pupils were awarded a bronze, silver or gold depending on their year group.
Aberdeenshire Council’s chair of education, learning and leisure committee, Councillor Isobel Davidson said: “These awards are a fantastic way to recognise the work and dedication shown by pupils in their extra-curricular activities and 97 awards is a tremendous result.”
The bronze awards were aimed at S4 pupils who have shown dedication throughout S1, S2 and S3 activities and who have continued this through into their fourth year. Silver awards were received by S5 pupils who have continued it on to fifth year.
The gold was for students who have continued to show dedication into their sixth year but who have also taken on an area of responsibility within their chosen activity.
