Alison McInnes, Scottish Liberal Democrat MSP for North East Scotland, today welcomed the announcement that the Scottish Government intends to introduce a law that will ensure seatbelts are provided on all buses dedicated to taking children to and from school.
Mrs McInnes commented: “All those involved in providing school transport have a duty of care and a responsibility to make sure that the children get there safely.
“We know wearing a seatbelt can dramatically reduce the risk of serious injury or death in road traffic accidents so it is common sense to make the provision of seatbelts mandatory and follow the lead set by Aberdeenshire Council.
“The UK Government made it clear some time ago that it is willing to discuss devolving powers that would enable such a law change. Parents and safety campaigners will be pleased that the Scottish Government is now taking steps to implement this worthwhile reform”.
