SNP MSP for Banffshire and Buchan Coast, Stewart Stevenson, used a recent Scottish Parliament debate on carbon capture to highlight the huge opportunity carbon capture and storage could offer to the North-east.
Peterhead Power Station has been chosen as one of two preferred bidders for a £1 billion Carbon Capture and Storage Commercialisation Programme.Mr Stevenson said: “ Carbon capture and storage offers many opportunities. It is the first step towards opening up the North Sea as a global hub for the carbon storage industry, and will bring investment and long term growth.
“The creation of the a carbon capture and storage project at Peterhead will offer a unique opportunity for the North-east. It offers advantages such as close proximity to the North Sea and existing infrastructure.
“It is hoped the UK Government will recognise the benefits that Peterhead offers and invest the £1 billion needed to start the industry on its road to success.”
