North East Liberal Democrat MSP Alison McInnes is encouraging young people to consider standing for the Scottish Youth Parliament.

Nominations are open to anyone aged 14 to 25 and the closing date for lodging nominations is October 31 at 5pm, with elections taking place from March 2 to 13.

Mrs McInnes said: “The youth parliament is a great way for younger people in the North East to get involved with politics. I would like to see more people taking part in politics and getting into the habit of voting at a younger age. That is why I think all elections should have a minimum voting age of 16.

“It was inspiring to see so many 16 and 17-year-olds debating the arguments put forward during the referendum. And I was delighted to see local schools holding mock referendums and becoming involved in the democratic process.

“With nominations now open, this is an excellent time for any local young person whose interest was galvanized by the referendum to continue their involvement in politics by representing the young people of the North East.”
