Former SNP leader and First Minister Alex Salmond has confirmed he is seeking a return to Westminster.

The Aberdeenshire East MSP is set to contest the Gordon seat at next May’s General Election.

Mr Salmond announced his intention to stand to constituency supporters in Ellon on Sunday.

Gordon is currently held by Liberal Democrat MP Sir Malcolm Bruce, who is retiring.

The announcement of Mr Salmond’s candidacy ends weeks of speculation about a possible return to the Commons.

He stood down as SNP leader and First Minister after the “Yes” campaign was defeated in September’s independence referendum.

Mr Salmond told his Ellon audience said that there is the “prospect of real power for Scotland” if the SNP wins a significant number of seats at Westminster.
