A housing development at Rathen has been turned down by councillors at a recent meeting of the Banff and Buchan Area Committee.

Colaren Homes submitted an application to build an initial six houses at a site north-west of Roseacre in the village of Rathen.

The application was referred to the Banff and Buchan Area Committee for determination. Three members of the Rathen community asked permission to speak at the meeting, giving their reasons for objecting to the proposal.

They said the proposed houses did not fit in with the character of the settlement, and the road network could not cope with additional traffic.

There were drainage issues at the proposed site and there is a risk of flooding near the site. The local primary school is already full and there would be difficulties in accommodating more children.

After a vote, the Area Committee refused the proposal.
