Appeal for witnesses after fatal accident

A Buchan man has died following a two-car smash on the Mintlaw to Toll of Birness road at the weekend.

Henry McPherson, known as Harry (61), of the St Fergus area. died in the collision which occurred at around 10.20pm on Friday , October 3, involving a Vauxhall Corsa and a Ford Focus.

Mr McPherson had been the driver of the Vauxhall Corsa.

The female passenger was conveyed to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary with serious injuries.

The lone female occupant of the Ford Focus was also conveyed to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary with serious injuries.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene of the crash but Mr McPherson sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene.

Crash scene investigators closed the road for around ten hours while a detailed examination was conducted at the scene and local diversions were put in place.

Following the accident, Sergeant David Pirie of the Road Policing Department said: “This was a tragic incident which has resulted in the death of a local man.

“Our investigation into the collision and the circumstances leading up to it are progressing.

“I would appeal to anyone who witnessed the collision or saw either vehicle in the lead up to it to contact us on 101,” he said.

Central Buchan councillor, Jim Ingram, who lives near to the scene of the crash, offered his condolences to the family of Mr McPherson.

Commenting, Cllr Ingram said: “I extend my sympathy to all friends and family of all concerned over their sad loss as a result of yet another weekend tragedy on this ill-fated road.”

Police are appealing to anyone who witnessed the collision or saw either vehicle in the lead up to it to contact Police Scotland on 101.
