VisitScotland’s newly-appointed Regional Director made a special visit to Fraserbugh recently.
Philip Smith visited the Broch on January 8, having accepted the invitation from Fraserburgh Area Tourism Group (FATG).
Mr Smith spent the day finding out what the area has to offer tourists and what work needs to be done to attract more visitors to the area.
During the trip to Fraserburgh, Mr Smith met with Mike Chandler, chair of FATG; Billy Watson, FATG secretary; and Gary Campbell, General Manager of the Museum of Scottish Lighthouses and Tourism Group committee member.
The VisitScotland official was given an overview of the tourism ‘offer’ in the Fraserburgh area and following a tour of the Lighthouse, was shown Pitsligo Castle. Mr Smith also visited Strichen Country Park, returning to Fraserburgh for a fly cup and fine piece at the Dunes Golf Centre.
Organisers of the visit said Mr Smith was impressed with the range of tourist attractions and events in the area but felt that more could be done to promote them to the outside world and to encourage visitors to come to the area for day trips and for longer stays.
It is understood that the apparent lack of accommodation, and the extent to which this is holding back tourism in the area, was also raised at the meeting. It was also noted that existing accommodation was of a good standard but generally catered for business tourists rather than leisure visitors.
Commenting, Tourism Group chair Mike Chandler said: “The key messages that Philip gave to FATG were that businesses should work together to provide tourists with added value packages, that the Fraserburgh Area Tourism Group should work with others to promote the area and that FATG should work to build confidence in the area and that it is a tourist destination that had much to offer visitors.”
