Buchan Juniors enjoy the Shetland experience

A GROUP of junior bowlers from Buchan Indoor Club at Mintlaw recently travelled to Shetland at the invitation of the juniors there.

For most, it was their first experience of a trip on the ferry and they made the most of the on-board facilities.

Exciting too was their first night in a large dormitory in the wonderful Islesburgh House Youth Hostel.

A whole weekend of bowling had been arranged at the superb Clickimin Leisure Centre in Lerwick. On the Saturday the Buchan Juniors competed in a pairs and singles competition and the outcome was a win for Buchan.

This was followed by a buffet, kindly laid on by club members, and then a session in the swiming pool.

After a buffet-style breakfast in the hostel, both groups took part part in a ‘hat’ competition on the Sunday, and both teams very much enjoyed the experience.

There was a prizegiving ceremony to follow, organised by the Shetland coaches.

Sight-seeing included a visit to the Up-Helly-A exhibition and a trip round the bay on the ‘Dim Riv’ viking galley when some of the party had a go at rowing.

The Buchan Juniors conducted themselves impeccably throughout and were a credit to both the club and their parents.

The whole party was immensely grateful for the hospitality and good will of the Shetlanders who provided transport whenever it was needed, laid on the buffet, supplied the prizes and generaly made the whole weekend most enjoyable.

BIBC has extended a return invitation to the Shetland Juniors. Juniors are reminded that this season’s coaching starts again on Friday, September 16, at 8.30pm. Old and new members are welcome.
