When any team first get promoted to the top flight of women’s football, their aim in the first season is to usually to learn and try and remain in the SWPL and Buchan Ladies were no different.
After a fairly controversial penultimate game of the season against Falkirk, The Quines had to take all threepoints in the last game of the season to be sure of staying up, with two of the bottom three placed teams facing relegation to the first division.
Buchan had some early pressure first Anderson charging forward and firing a shot which was deflected for a corner then Reid with a punt from 25 yards out which went wide.
Ten minutes in Buchan were awarded a penalty for a foul on Brown. It was Silcocks who stepped up and hit low and hard in to open the scoring. Buchan’s joy and lead were short lived though as a ball forward was collected by Scolley who sprinted forward and placed her shot, giving Flaherty little chance and equalising.
In 26 minutes Reid sent a ball to Anderson, this time the youngster was onside. The tall 15 year-old showed her athletic pedigree, leaving the Kilwinning defence behind, went one-on-one with the keeper then placed a shot right to put Buchan in the lead.
Buchan came out fighting in the second half, pushing the home side into their own half.
Thirty minutes in Buchan looked to have the points wrapped up as Anderson, in a duplicate of her first goal, received a pass, strode forward, made an angle then fired home another well placed shot. The final whistle blew and it was a tired, wet, cold but happy Buchan team who took the points and the right to remain in the SWPL for another season.
