Broch cricketers end season with exciting Sevens tourney
Saturday saw Fraserburgh Cricket Club hold their annual Sevens tournament which invites clubs from around Aberdeen city and shire to play for the Marshall Bell Memorial Cup.
The sun was shining and with the return of last year's winners Ellon, as well as Methlick, Caledonian, Turriff and St Ronald the gathering promised to be a memorable one. A 7s tournament involves each side bowling six overs with each player (not including the wicket keeper) bowling one over.
This year's event was one of the most successful and exciting with six teams taking part. The teams: Fraserburgh, St Ronald, Methlick, Turriff, Ellon and Caledonian, were split into two groups of three with the winner of each group going through to the final.
To make things interesting each team was granted a 'powerplay' over in which each run scored would be doubled. This added to the enjoyment of the occasion and was instrumental in providing some unusually high team/individual scores.
Fraserburgh met Methlick in the first match of the day, and got off to a flyer as the Broch batsmen C. Bowie(18) and L. Bowie (24 not out) took advantage of their powerplay over and eventually set Methlick a target of 75 for victory.
Methlick struggled to keep up with the run rate set by the Broch and failed to capitalise on their powerplay over, and even the late batting intervention of veteran cricketer Bertie Bowie, who had kindly agreed to be Methlick's seventh man for the day, was not enough to pass the Broch total as Methlick succumbed to defeat by 26 runs.
The next match was the group two opener between Ellon and Turriff. Ellon batted first and immediately set about the Turriff bowlers. Led by the batting of A. Arora (29) and H. Woolrige-Gordon (41) Ellon managed to put on a commanding total of 94 for the loss of two wickets. Turriff could only muster 49 in reply with opening batmas R. Doss top scoring with 27.
Back in Group 1 Fraserburgh met the challenge of Caledonian for a place in the final. The Broch got off to a slow start, with only six runs being scored off the powerplay over. They ended their innings on a defendable 45.
The Caledonian reply was slow and for a time it looked as though the Broch might be able to deprive Caledonian of victory. The match came down to the final over with Caledonian clinching victory with 5 balls to spare.
Soon after Caledonian booked their place in the final St Ronald did so also, disposing of both Turriff and favourites Ellon along the way. The final itself proved to be a very one-sided affair with St Ronald amassing an impressive 124 from their six overs.
Praveen top scoring with an incredible 93 runs! Caledonian struggled against some very tight bowling and reached 34 after their six overs giving victory to St Ronald. St Ronald graciously accepted the cup as well as several raffles.
This, coupled with the winner of the Golden Over competition (participants are asked to bowl six balls at the stumps with the person with most hits winning a prize) being a St Ronald player made it a very successful day for the Aberdeen side.
The end of the tournament saw the end of cricket for Fraserburgh in 2010. Fraserburgh will return to action in April 2011 and would like to remind people who are interested in taking up cricket or would like to get involved with the club that their services would be most welcome.
Fraserburgh Cricket Club would like to thank all the clubs who made the journey to Fraserburgh and all those who helped with scoring, umpirng, raffles and BBQ. Your contribution was very much appreciated, ensured everything ran smoothly and that a great day was had by all.
