Invercairn find extra time cup final winner
INVERCAIRN United claimed the Elizabethan Cup after a tremendous extra time tussle with local rivals St Combs.
St Combs were first to create a chance after Cardno went down the right, beating two players but his cross was just too strong for Taylor.
A long ball forward found Cardno who held off his marker and shot but was easily gathered by Campbell. At the other end a shot from Barbour went high over the bar. From a St Combs corner Campbell did well to punch clear while under pressure.
Forman played in Martin, but Buckley did well to beat out his shot for a corner which was over hit and cleared.
Cardno thought he had given St Combs the lead but the linesman had his flag up for offside long before the ball went into the net. An overhead kick from Taylor went narrowly wide of the Invercairn post.
Last chance of the half fell to St Combs after Cardno fed in S Bruce, but a brilliant tackle inside the box by defender S Stephen kept the game goalless at half time.
Right at the start of the second half Campbell made a brilliant double save, the second from Cardno from inside the 6 yard box.
From the resulting corner Mark Fraser blasted high over the bar.
St Combs took the lead after 55 minutes when Cardno broke clear and played in N Taylor who fired home. Shortly after John James Sim had a long range shot easily saved but minutes later he drew Invercairn level after being played in by Martin, he beat his marker and fired a low shot under Buckley.
Back came St Combs and a solo run by Man Of the match Mark Fraser through the middle of the Invercairn defence and shot home to give St Combs the lead again on 80 minutes. Invercairn substitute Alexander Stephen was causing a few problems for the St Combs defence after coming on and it was he who levelled the score at two-all from a short corner he received the ball out wide and cut in to score with a pile driver of a shot.
Into extra time and John James Sim had a shot saved at his near post by Buckley.
John James Sim did give Bulger the lead for the first time in the match with a shot low into the corner of the net.
With St Combs pushing for an equaliser Invercairn broke up field and Martin sealed the win with an excellent finish.
This was an excellent advert for Welfare football and credit to Invercairn who twice had to come from behind to force the match into extra time and just seemed to have more determination to win in the end.
The match was excellently handled by the three officials who kept the game flowing.
