The 2011-2012 has been a great season for the 25 kite buggy pilots in the Scottish Power Kite Association series, with a total of 20 races held over eight events spread between Fraserburgh, Luce Bay and St Andrews.

Top achievement went to Fraserburgh’s Pete Buchan who brought two trophies home in his first race season, winning the 16” wheel class and, also, earning the ‘Best Newcomer’ trophy as the highest placed newcomer to the fleet.

Buchan had a close contest all season with last year’s winner of the 16” wheel class, Mark Davies, also of Fraserburgh, from Synergy Kitesports, but managed to beat Davies in the overall points by the end of the last event.

Despite being in the smaller 16” wheel buggies, Pete came 8th overall in the Scottish fleet and Mark 9th.

The other local kite buggy pilot in the Scottish fleet, Maggie Davies, also from Synergy Kitesports, was competing in the larger class eight buggies, and came in as the top female pilot and a respectable 10th place overall.

A lack of consistency has been an issue for her this season with some accidents causing her to lose places overall, but she has achieved some great results including a win where she crossed the finish line ahead of the entire Scottish fleet.

Pete, Mark and Maggie all qualified in the top ten of the Scottish fleet, earning places on the Scottish team to compete at the kite buggy racing world championships to be held in France in July.

The Scottish Power Kite Association race series is hoping to return to Fraserburgh in the 2012-13 season, bringing another chance for locals to come and watch this exciting sport.

Five new pilots joined the fleet for the 2011-12 season and more are always most welcome.

For anyone looking to get involved in kite buggying or any other kite sports, more information can be found at www.synergykitesports.com or by contacting local racers Mark and Maggie Davies at info@synergykitesports.com.
