Local butchers earn their crust at awards

Bruce of the Broch has been presented with a top award at the 16th World Scotch Pie Championships.

The butcher won bronze awards in the Hot Savourycategory for its Mince & Mealie and Chicken & Mealie pies as well as in the sausage roll category.

It also scooped a silver award in the Best Football Pie category for its steak pies at Fraserburgh United.

A spokesperson said: “We are delighted with our win and can go away with our heads held very high indeed. To have been judged as one of the best in the land against so many of our peers is a huge achievement.”

The ultimate prize and new holder of the title ‘World Scotch Pie Champion 2015’ went to Murrays Bakers of Perth.

Also at the ceremony was Bert Fowlie of Strichen which claimed two gold awards in the Apple pie category and Vegetarian Savoury category for its Apple pie and Mediteranian Lasagne Pie respectively .

Bert Fowlie also received two silver awards for its North Sea Fish Pie and Wild West Chicken Pie. The Strichen butcher also received a bronze award for its mince bridie.

A record entry of 100 butchers and bakers took part in the competition with some 567 pies, pasties, sausage rolls, bridies, savouries and apple pies.

Alan Clarke of Scottish Bakers, said: “Once again we have brought together the best pies and baked goods in the land and today we can really celebrate the achievement of our hard working butchers and bakers. My heartfelt congratulations go to our winner, and indeed everyone taking away a prize, they are all winners in my book.”
