All roads lead to Longside as gala season gets underway

IT’S the start of gala season again and first up is Longside, where the gala fun kicks off on Thursday, May 16 with the ever popular duck race in the Cairngall Burn from 6.30pm to 8pm.

The 2013 concert in Longside Parish Church hall will take place that evening from 7pm to 10pm featuring the Garioch Blend dance band and the ever popular Eddie Rose.

Entry is £6 which includes raffle and refreshments.

There’s plenty of fun lined-up for Friday, May 17, with family games in the field from 6.30pm to 8pm, with the burger van open from 6pm.

Star attraction for the evening is ‘The Gig’ which will be held in the marquee from 8.30pm to 1am and is stricly for those aged 16 and over.

Taking to the stage with be The Trade, Hard Cash & The Folsoum Four and Velvet Audio.

There sill be stricly no admission to the marquee after 10pm without a ticket and free buses will be provided to Peterhead and Mintlaw at 1am.

Saturday’s main gala day will begin at 12.45pm with a parade from the car park with Theatre Modo and the Anne Buchan Dance School, when the gala pricesses will be escorted to the main arena for the official opening by Gordon Hay and crowning of Gala Princesses Morgan Anderson and Katie Wink.

There will be five-a-side football fun all afternoon, while on the outdoor stage there will be the Caroline McGruther Highland dancers, Skip 2 The Beat, the Anne Buchan Dancers and Zumba with Rhonda Ferrier.

In the social club there will be a fun teddybears’ picnic for the little ones.

Teas will be served in tent all afternoon, and there will be a selection of stalls both in the tend and around the field for you to browse round.

Also int he field will be vintage cars and tractors, birds of prey, bouncy castles and rides for children, balloon race, fun from Theatre Modo, Zorbing Balls, a barbecue and ice-cream.

In the evening there will be a disco in the marquee with from 6pm to 8pm for children, who must be accompanied by an adult.

A disco by DJ Jasper will also run from 8pm til late for over 16s. Entry is £10 and again there will be no entry after 10pm without a ticket.

Sundays’ fun begins with the annual church service at 10am in the marquee.

This will be followed by a new event for this year, ‘Lets get Ready to Rumble’ at 2pm which is a series of team games in the football park. There will also be a raffle draw and prizegiving as well as stalls in both the tent and the field.

Again, teas will be available in the marquee and there will also be a bridal fashion show by Catriona Molver.

Children will be well catered for with a bouncy castle and fairground rides, while for petrol-heads there will be a static car show sponsored by Duthie Motors and a truck show.

So for gala fun - hopefully in the sun - head to Longside, where you’ll find a wealth of entertainment for all ages.
