Magic: The Gathering might sound rather sinister to many local residents.
But, on Saturday, a group of gamers attended a pre-release event at local newsagent R & S Dyga to break open the ‘Helvault’.
The competitive trading card game, which began in 1993 has continued to grow over the years, with a dedicated fan base turning out to tournaments all over the world.
Ian Dyga, owner of R & S Dyga, ran the latest event out of his store.
The pre-release, which teases the latest expansion ‘Avacyn Restored’, introduces the concept of a prison - the ‘Helvault’ - being broken open and its inmates, an array of demons, escaping.
More than a dozen people turned up for the event on Saturday morning, battling it out to take home a collection of new, promotional merchandise to add to their collections.
Mr Dyga said of the game: “It’s still going strong worldwide.
“We had a good turnout for the event, which was won by Pete Jappy.”
Ian Dyga runs a by-weekly game night for Magic: The Gathering on Thursday, 6pm ‘till 9pm, at the store for those keen on picking up the game and testing out new combinations of Magic decks.
For more information on the game nights, enquire in-store at 51 Broad Street.
