Lesley Morgan, Lorraine Reid, Velinda Barclay and Lindsey Mowatt will take to the streets and motorway around Glasgow on Sunday September 4, as they join thousands of runners taking part in the Great Scottish Run.
Speaking to the Herald, Lorraine explained why the group had chosen to support that particular charity, she said: “Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in the UK and every year more and more people are looking to Breast Cancer Care Scotland to help support them through their diagnosis.
“My sister, Nettie Burt, would have celebrated her 50th birthday the weekend of the run, tragically Annette was diagnosed with breast cancer in June 2005 and died the following December.
“Breast Cancer Care were there supporting Annette throughout her illness and I wanted to do something to support them.”
Having met at Fraserburgh JogScotland, the four friends will have been seen pounding the streets of the Broch training three time week in preparation for the run. Lorraine and Velinda, who have both taken part in the event in previous years told the Herald how the atmosphere is unbeatable, they said: “We are taking part in the 10K street event and will be running through the communities of Glasgow and along part of the motorway. Every kilometre is marked with a lone piper and with more than 23,000 people taking part in the event last year, the streets were lined not only with runners but also with supporters as communities came out to cheer everyone and motorists stopped and tooted their horns encouraging everyone along the way. It is a fantastic run and the atmosphere is unbeatable.”
Lesley and Lindsey added: “We are all really looking forward to it.”
To get behind the runners and show your support for them and Breast Cancer Care, sponsor sheets have been made available at the following outlets: Boots, Broad Street, Fraserburgh; Bicocchi Ice Cream Shop, College Bounds, Crimond Surgery, Morning, Noon and Night, College Bounds and at Jog Scotland.
