Co-operative seeks candidates

The Co-operative is calling for customers in the North-east to have their say in how the business is run by standing for election to the local area committee.

The Co-operative is owned by the people who trade with it, and customers who are members can stand to become the eyes and ears of the business, having a say in how it operates and how it supports local communities.

There are four vacant seats on the Grampian Area Committee, and any member of The Co-operative in the area is eligible to nominate themselves if they have traded with the business throughout 2012.

Tom Copeland, Regional Democratic Services Manager for The Co-operative Group in Scotland, said: “We’re looking for co-operatively minded people who are passionate about their community to come forward and nominate themselves in this year’s election.

“This is an extremely exciting time to be involved in the Co-operative Group, and the elections present members with a great opportunity to make a difference. From feeding back experiences of the business at monthly meetings, to attending events throughout the year, and helping to select community groups to receive funding, the role of a committee member is so varied.

“We always welcome applications from new people with fresh ideas, and I hope that some of our customers are inspired to take their membership to the next level with this opportunity.”

Elected members are rewarded with a fee for their time, which as a minimum includes attending meetings once a month. There are also significant training opportunities and events to take part in, which are optional.

To stand for election nominees must have been a Co-operative Member for over 12 months and have accumulated 250 Membership points in the last 12 months.

Nominations are open until May 13. To find out more, email or call 0800 015 6008.

The Co-operative is the fourth biggest food retailer in Scotland.
