Moray Offshore Renewables Ltd (MORL), the company responsible for the development of a 1116MW offshore wind project in the Outer Moray Firth, has held a supply chain event at the North East Scotland College in Fraserburgh.

The event focused on the Onshore Transmission Infrastructure; the onshore underground cable and electricity substation infrastructure which will be constructed in Aberdeenshire to connect the offshore windfarm to the national electricity grid.

Local businesses with the potential to tender for the works associated with installing the underground cable and the substation have been invited to meet with MORL and some of its potential principal contractors, in order to allow information about the works and the associated contracting strategy to be presented.

Commenting, Banff and Buchan Dr Eilidh Whiteford, who opened the event, said: “I was delighted to open this supply chain event – offering local businesses an insight into the potentially lucrative contracts that may be associated with this development. This project is to be commended for really engaging with local communities – be that businesses or the college where this event was held.

“The renewables sector offers real opportunities to our coastal communities and that is why it is important that development companies hold events such as these, putting our local businesses in prime position to bid for contracts.”

MORL Deputy Project Director Tom LoTurco commented: “Over the past few months we have had strong engagement with local communities about the proposed onshore transmission infrastructure, which is vital to get the electricity produced in the Moray Firth to homes and industry onshore.

“We are delighted with the strength of interest in our proposals and we are pleased to be able to meet with the local businesses for which this work should present a good commercial opportunity.

“Scottish Enterprise has been instrumental in enabling local supply chain development through their work including organisation of events such as this one.
