An annual charity dance in Fraserburgh has raised nearly £4000.
The event, which was held in the town’s Leisure Centre, was organised by Isobel Buchan whose daughter, Angela, sustained an acquired brain injury in June 2010 at the age of 26.
Of the money raised, a total of £1500 is going to Momentum, which provides rehabilitation, training and care services for people with brain injuries. The remainder of the money raised at the dance – which also featured a raffle and auction – is being distributed to the Brain Injury Grampian group and Diabetes Grampian.
Two years ago, Angela was on a night out with friends when she started to feel ill. She then fell into a diabetic coma which resulted in her being left with severe cognitive impairment. The illness forced her to give up her job as a retail manager.
The fundraising dance came just as Angela celebrated her continued rehabilitation by securing a work placement at a local hotel, which is set to become a paid job and help her regain some of her independence.
The donation is in recognition of the help Angela received from Momentum in Grampian, which her family describe as “amazing”.
Angela has made substantial progress thanks to outreach support from Momentum’s Transitions programme followed by employment support through its Pathways vocational rehabilitation initiative.
Commenting, Isobel said: “The first day Angela came into contact with the staff on Momentum’s Transitions programme a weight lifted off our shoulders and for the first time we saw there was a light at the end of the tunnel. We felt they really understood what we were going through.
“It is still a rollercoaster of a ride for Angela, and all those close to her, but it is nothing short of fantastic what she has achieved.
“She loves her new work at the hotel and already feels that she is regaining some of her old life.
“We cannot thank Momentum enough for the support they have given Angela.”
