A former Fraserburgh Academy pupil is helping to inspire young people to consider a future in science, technology, engineering and maths as a popular science festival comes to Banff and Buchan for the first time.

Chloe Cruden from Cairnbulg is working as part of a team bringing TechFest – a popular annual festival in Aberdeen – to Banff and Buchan.

For 2012 TechFest also forms part of the British Science Festival, Europe’s largest celebration of science and technology, which will see more than 250 events take place in Aberdeen and north-east Scotland from September 4-9.

TechFest in September is now in its 19th year and attracts thousands of visitors to events shows and presentations designed to inspire young people in the four main subjects of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and encouraging them to go on to follow a career which utilises these skills.

Chloe left Fraserburgh Academy in 2009 went on to study at Aberdeen College and then Banff and Buchan College.

She joined TechFest in September last year as a festival assistant and joined Techfest-SetPoint full time in May 2012.

Chloe will be coordinating a series of events for S1 and S2 pupils taking place at the College on Wednesday, September 5 and Thursday, September 6.

Sessions include ‘Life Science Drawing’, which compares modern techniques of microscopy with the early days when images had to be drawn by hand, where pupils can create their own work of art based on the cells seen through a microscope.

There will be an interactive journey through the workings of the nervous system, a look behind the periodic table, and pupils can explore the nature and structure of DNA and what happens when something goes wrong. Visiting S1s and S2s can also find out about issues relating to man-made climate change and resource depletion, and will see if they can send a message around a room using a chain reaction between levers, weights, pulleys, slopes and rollers.

Chloe said: “I love working for Techfest-SetPoint and it is great to see TechFest in September come to Banff and Buchan for the first time with events at the College I attended myself as a pupil.”
