Council discusses importance of Strichen Conservation area

Members of the Buchan Area Committee were asked to endorse additional planning advice for the Strichen Conservation Area at a meeting recently.

Councillors were presented with a report on the Conservation Area by Head of Planning and Building Services, Robert Gray.

The report included a series of points relating to the appearance, architectural character and historic importance of Strichen.

Commenting, Councillor Anne Allan said she was glad the report had been brought before the committee but was disappointed that guidance notes had not been made available to the public.

Similar concerns were expressed by committee chairman, Councillor Stuart Pratt, who suggested the report be considered by Strichen Community Council.

Cllr Jim Ingram offered his support for conservation but added that development in Strichen may be needed.

Mr Gray stated that guidance notes had not been sent out for public consultation but that a number of public meetings had been held in January and December 2010. He added: “We must do everything that is expected of us and offer guidance. We are mindful of the council’s role.”

Cllr Pratt said that there had been a considerable level of support for conservation when he attended a public meeting on the issue.

The committee agreed to support the report and seek feedback on its contents.
