Invercairn Gala is almost upon us with activities week kicking-off on Saturday July 30. Even with just one weekend to go, gala fever started a number of weeks back when the marquee tickets went on sale and the fliers and posters were distributed.
This year brings another fantastic array of activities to suit all ages, and most die hard attendees know not to miss any of them!
A representative of Invercairn Community Support Group told the Herald: “Due to huge support and attendance at all our events, the traditional entertainment throughout the gala week required little adjustment.
“The only casualty this year has been the Junior ‘Stars In Their Eyes’ show on Tuesday night which the committee decided to replace with a giant ‘Family Zumba’ class in the marquee for all those who just want to have some fun whilst keeping fit.”
Kicking-off the annual activities week is the ‘Golf Open’ at Inverallochy Golf Club, with the main week’s activities starting on Monday August 1 with the kiddies ‘Treasure Trail’.
Following on from the Family Zumba class on Tuesday night is the hilarious ‘Wheelbarrow Racing’ and afterwards the popular ‘Family Horse Racing Night’ leaves quite a few sore throats from all the ‘nag’ cheering, although sometimes pigs with saddles and puppet jockeys, brings a few smiles.
Some would say the highlight of the week is Wednesday. In the afternoon there is ‘Kiddies Bingo’ but the main evening’s events are the infamous ‘Quiz Night’ and the mesmerising ‘Talent-less Show’.
Uncle Brian entertains the wannabe pop stars at the ‘Junior Disco’ on Thursday afternoon and at night time ‘Bingo’ silence is followed by hoots of ‘house!’, but make sure it’s a genuine call or else the whole marquee will erupt in hoots of ‘braying donkeys’.
Back for the second year running due to very popular demand will be the enormously entertaining ‘John McRuvie’ (from Northsound Radio) and his comedy disco.
The start of the gala weekend kicks-off with the ‘Fancy Dress’ on Friday afternoon and seeing the results of hours of labour, gives the judges a major task to pick out the winners. In the evening, the marquee dance will be entertained by the fantastic ‘Stone Cold Sober’ band ensuring the mix of young and not so young have a great night.
The main gala day on Saturday August 6 has something for everyone and will be opened by local MP Dr Eilidh Whiteford.
In the evening the adults will be subjected to a night of music from ‘Splash’ with ‘A Night With The Stars’ who will ensure the last night goes out on a huge high.
Not forgetting Sunday, the ‘Gala Praise’ is always worth a mention with local talent and residents raising the roof with our popular host Bill Sangster.
He continued: “Invercairn Gala is extremely lucky to be supported by a fantastic group of volunteers and supporters from the local communities who give up their time and effort to make sure the week long event is a big success.
The spokesman added: “On behalf of the Invercairn Community Support Group, we would like to thank everyone who has supported us and made the event the success it has become.
“We welcome you to come along to our Gala Week, enjoy the atmosphere, have a great time and don’t be frightened to participate and lend a helping hand. Just bring the sunshine!”
