The report gave the prison a poor performance rating in relation to Health and Wellbeing and said that nurses did not feel safe attending some parts of the facility.

The report states: “Nurses were found to be frequently threatened and verbally abused by prisoners.

“Nursing staff did not feel safe attending different wings of the prison and felt unsupported by SPS [Scottish Prison Service] staff.”

The report was also critical of the prison’s approach in dealing with inmates ability to seek psychiatric help with a waiting list of forty-one prisoners waiting to see the mental health team.

It highlighted a lack of process saying that there was no clear triage system to assess urgency of need.

The report stated: “We found no evidence of formal assessment or care plans for prisoners with mental health needs.”

In the inspection carried out between November and December last year the report found that of the ten main focuses of the inspection five were given a satisfactory performance, while three were termed generally acceptable.

Only Transitions from custody to life in the community was rated as a good performance.

In the first full inspection of the facility and its 506 prisoners 21 months after it opened in March 2014 the report also highlighted a few more positives regarding the prison.

In their findings the inspectors wrote that: “The Family Centre and Help Hub, operated by Action for Children, was an excellent facility offering support for both families and visitors.

“Considerable efforts were made to help prisoners maintain good contact with their families.”

David Strang, HM Chief Inspector of Prisons says: “I look forward to seeing these improvements introduced through the prison’s future plans”.
