Metaphrog Comics visited Fraserburgh Academy on Friday of last week. They spoke to S5 media classes, S5 Art classes and an S1 class studying graphics and the graphic novel.

Metaphrog are the Franco-Scottish duo of Sandra Marrs and John Chalmers who have been creating comics, graphic novels and illustrations for 15 years. John has a PhD from Strathclyde in micromachining and Sandra an Arts and Letters degree from France.

The duo, whose work has been nominated for several industry awards, are most famous for their graphic novel series “Louis”, which has become a cult hit over five publications.

In 2009, the partnership converted Edwin Morgan’s poem, “The First Men on Mercury”, into a successful comic.

Pupils watched a presentation and they talked about the creative process involved in visual storytelling and character design and they were given an opportunity to create their own character.

The pair were said to have offered an enjoyable experience for the students involved.

The visit was part funded by Scottish Book Trust, a national organisation which aims to promote reading and writing throughout young-people in Scotland.
